This page is dedicated to our 4-legged companions! It took us a long time to realize that as much as we love our dogs and they love us, we were treating other animals with cruelty and carelessness. Cows, chickens, pigs and all other farm animals have the same emotions and desires as these beautiful pooches. But the Trio was very patient as we made the connection and now as we knit with the dogs at our feet, we feel good knowing that the yarn we use didn’t exploit anyone. They are superheros and superheroines in their own right, and although their humans are the alphas of the pack, they claim to rule the roost! Be sure to check out Let Sleeping Dogs Lie… for a continually updated pictography/journal of the pooches.. And now I’ve added a page dedicated to doggie treats, since they seem to be more frequent here at the Primate – check out the The Pooch ate my Homework page! 🙂
First off, we have Mocha (aka Small), and her superheroine alter-ego is ‘The Wiggler.’ Her powers include driving one absolutely insane by licking to the point of turning over government secrets, as well as the ability to bounce from her hind legs like Tigger twice as high as she is tall. One way to attempt to divert the licking is to pet her, but this doesn’t always work – she sneaks in licks and we are all powerless against it. Although she is getting older, she can fly when she’s feeling extra spunky. But the greatest of her powers is the ability to continuously wiggle and the hypnotizing property of her tail..although she can wag from side to side, she can hypnotize her foes with a circular motion of the tail. She is a Princess by all accounts, and a rather cheeky one at that! Don’t be fooled by her cute and innocent appearance…She can strike at any moment!
Next we have Copper (aka Medium; 2000-2008). His superhero alter-ego is ‘The Bulldozer.’ His powers also lie in a powerful and hypnotizing tail (a trait which was passed down to his daughter Mocha), the exception is that the hypnosis only works on other canines, mostly his cousin Kirsche. His wagging is powerful enough to bruise a leg or poke an eye out, human or canine, thus defeating his foes by blinding them or affecting their ability to stand. He enjoys dancing with his human and smelling the roses, but in a manly way. He is low to the ground, therefore has a very stable center of gravity. He chooses to bulldoze his foes as they are in motion, usually fleeing or attempting to avert his headbutting. His big and round brown eyes can fool anyone into thinking he is not so smart, but he’s as cunning as they come..
Last, but certainly not least, we have Kirsche (aka Large). Kirsche’s superheroine personality is ‘Galootius Maximus.’ Her super powers include drowning foes in drool, burying them in her extra skin and crushing them beneath her giant paws. However, she’s easily defeated by offers of peanut butter, as she will stop whatever she’s doing to get her chompers on it. She’s so big that The Bulldozer can walk underneath her belly, but she still likes to pretend to be a lap dog.
This page has the following sub pages.
OH MY GOD!!!!!! They are so cute… Mocha is all grown up and Copper still has his eyes. Can you send me a picture of them. Kirsche is very adorable too.. Is that snow on the ground? lol I miss my Turbo.
Love ya,
Liz
Oh wow, those three faces could easily get away with murder! So adorable!! I was cracking up at the “bulldozer” and his ability to poke an eye out/bruise you with his tail. I totally know a distant cousin of Copper!
These are way to cute! I’m sure they get away with everything. They sure would in my house!
Indeed they do WillowMoon. On our ‘About’ page, you can see Kirsche in her full-grown glory in our ‘party of 5’ pic (Copper’s hiding under the coffee table). That was a few Christmas’s ago, which we dubbed “Dogapalooza ’06” because we had all 3 pooches in the house – and all in my queen size bed, not to mention Jo and I as well! It was a cozy squeeze that’s for sure….but who could kick these cuddlies out of bed?
Those are the best pics I’ve seen in a long time!! 🙂
Hi, just wondering what you feed your dogs? Do you feed them regular dog food? I am seriously thinking about getting a cat and am having the moral dilemna of whether I should try to feed the cat vegan food or if I should give it regular cat food.
Well, Mocha really loves veggies (I think she’s a vegan at heart) but her biology is omni. I feed Mocha mostly vegetables since that’s what she loves, but I also feed her raw marrow bones and raw chicken legs (with all the meat on them). I do also sometimes include chicken hearts, gizzards, etc. It’s based on the BARF diet for dogs and cats. Since cats are true carnivores, they would need uber adequate supplementation if you tried to make them vegan against their biology so I wouldn’t recommend it. I look at it this way, yes I’m an ethical vegan and I oppose the industry that we’ve created which turns beings into ‘things.’ However, my dogs’ health comes before my personal choices to be vegan (since humans are better off vegan anyway, healthwise in this context). Since feeding my dog some chicken legs and organs is better for her health, I will accept the death of the chicken over the malnourishment and death of my dog. Some vegans may not agree with that, but I’m considering the best interests of my pooches – which is exactly what I vowed to do when I chose to be their guardian. It’s a personal choice for everyone. I know some vegans feed their dogs a vegan diet, but I know cats as true carnivores and you can’t change their biology. It’s definitely important to educate yourself on all the ins and outs of including meat in the diet (unless you feed your cat a standard cat diet), just like veganism..you want to make sure they are getting the full range of nutrients otherwise it could turn unhealthy. Either way, I do think a homemade diet is better, even if it includes meat, than a commercially produced one – since there is animal products inevitably in such processed foods that you can’t control.
My pups are vegan and I make them homemade food (which I agree with Sara about: homemade vegan or not is WAY better than anything in most of those repulsive can mixes…you can’t believe what they put in there!). I’ve thought about this since I intend on adopting a cat at some point in the future, and I am going to feed my cat a vegan diet. I understand that cats are true carnivores and would only feed them a diet that would not hinder their health. There are dry and canned cat food options out there that are vegan (vegecat, evolution diet etc.) that include all nutrients to keep your cat healthy. I recommend researching the vitamin and nutrient needs of cats and deciding from there. I did a lot of research before my boys went vegan. For a cat I think it would be easier and probably necessary to feed them a purchased food (such as the ones I mentioned) since cats are more susceptible to certain illnesses/diseases from things lacking in their diet! An important thing to watch out for is urinary tract problems, especially with male cats. This can be an issue with a vegan diet (although from my history with cats it can be an issue regardless, males are very susceptible.)
I don’t have any problem with cats or dogs eating other animals since that’s what they’d do in the wild. It’s more how humans cage and kill the animals that I’ve got a problem with. It’d be nice if there were free range humanely killed cat food….
Cats in my experience are extremely fussy and do not like change in their diets so it would have to be a slow transition to a vegan diet (unless you adopted a kitten). I did get a cat on Saturday but she is about 3 and already fed a normal cat food diet. I also looked around for some vegan cat food but I couldn’t find any in a store so I’d have to order over the internet. I think once she’s settled in to her new home I might try a slow transition and see how it goes.
Summer (the cat) didn’t even like the fish based cat food I got so I’ve had to buy the meaty kind and slowly incorporate fish (I think fish is better plus at least they have a life before they are caught) so I am not sure whether she will actually take to a non fish/meat diet.
I agree…humans are the worst when it comes to egotistical rights to abuse other beings. Keep me posted on how it goes with Summer! Congratulations on your new addition to the family!
