I know that the kids of my generation will remember those Orange PushUps from the ice cream man, with the polka dotted cardboard and pushing up the sorbet before it could melt all over your hand from underneath! Ah, the good old days…summertime and sticky hands…ah! So what is an adult to do when you want to recapture a bit of youth – make orange sorbet with an optional shot of vodka! Ha ha! And best of all, I didn’t have to make any simple syrup since I used agave nectar!! This sorbet comes out so slushy good, you’ll wish you had a pushup container to eat it from!
Ingredients:
1.5 C fresh squeezed orange juice
1.5 C orange juice (prepackaged)
1 C agave nectar
1 TBSP vodka *optional
Directions:
Whisk together all ingredients and pour into an ice cream maker. Freeze according to manufacturer’s directions. Mine took about 25 minutes. Place in freezer-acceptable container, and freeze for about an hour before enjoying!!
Happy Freezing!

I LOOOOOOOOVED push-up pops as a kid. A push-up pop with a kick might be just what I need some nights after the little one goes to bed! Good thinking!
Excellent!! I’m so glad that someone actually knew what I was talking about – I thought maybe I was just crazy for remembering childhood treats like Push-Ups and Bomb Pops…
Oooh yes…super good – and there’s not so much ‘kick’ that it would get you sauced. Just enough to keep the sorbet from becoming rock solid, and adding a level of interest that may otherwise go unnoticed
you just took me back to 20 years ago. every afternoon when i was wee i ate a orange pushpop when i got home from school while watching “scooby doo”! that is so awesome! and so is this recipe! thank you!
Uhh! My little brothers just bought push-pops! I miss them so much…I wish they would make a vegan version to sell in stores, but your looks great and super simple!
I actually think that this recipe would make a pretty good popsicle (just not push up, but we can’t have EVERYTHING lol). Just take the recipe and don’t use an ice cream machine, just stick the mixture directly into popsicle molds. Eh Sara? If I make this, that’s probably what I’ll do, Matt’s addicted to popsicles lately!
This sounds really great, I love sorbets!
Mihl: Thanks!! I love sorbets too…hence the overpopulation of sorbet recipes ever-growing on the blog
Jo and I discussed a green tea-pomegranate sorbet last night, so there may be another sorbet in the future for the Innocent Primate…
VV: Totally! they would make EXCELLENT popsicles!!! I like it…hmm..another excuse to go shopping for kitchen/baking stuff…popsicle molds
Shelby: I hear ya, but it’s probably best that they don’t make a vegan version otherwise I may just start to live off frozen treats for good
Jessy: Oh yeah, scooby doo! “where are you? we’ve got some work to do now!” …like make orange sorbet!! ah, hahaa
Neato!
I was thinking about the popsicle idea last night, and i may have to rethink my answer. I would omit the vodka for popsicles – since the alcohol helps prevent rock hard freezing. It wouldn’t be a very good popsicle if it couldn’t stay on its stick
And maybe even reduce the nectar to 1/2 C, simply because I don’t know it’s freezing properties..or switch to a sugar-water syrup like the other sorbets..there may need to be more experiments involved…what a shame
Agave freezes fine, I’ve used it in a bunch of popsicles. So I wouldn’t worry too much about it…but the alcohol on the other hand…good idea to omit (sorry Sara….this may have ruined you on popsicles lol). But I’m sure you’ll experiment anyway….just for the hell of it
A friend referred me to this post because I just posted on my Facebook status: “Kylee wonders if they still make Push-Ups.”
My dad had a grocery store when I was growing up in the ’60s (he sold it in 1968) and he let me get one thing every day to eat – either a piece of candy from the penny candy box or one thing from the ice cream freezer. At least half of the time I chose a Push-Up. I absolutely love orange sherbet (I am eating some right now!) and will have to try your recipe!
Hey Kylee! I was the same way – I’d always get the bomb pop or the push-up from the ice cream truck man! I just did a quick search, and found – in the Illinois area, there is a place called Ice Cream Planet (http://www.icecreamplanet.com/SchoolValueProducts.html) that will sell them, though it has to be bought in uber bulk. And while I can’t vouche for the quality of these, Nestle makes various flavors for Push-Ups (though not vegan).
Hope this helped!! Let me know if you test out the recipe, and if you think it tastes like the Push-Ups you remember, or if it was just my brain playing tricks on me…
[...] all that activity, you definitely deserve a treat. Try a blueberry tart (but using raspberries), orange push-up sorbet, or Jamaican pineapple tango [...]
We got some Push Pop Containers from Amazon and a great vegan recipe for my food allergic child using soy creamer and OJ concentrate. So yummy tastes just like my childhood push up.
